Denmark takes over the EU Presidency

The Danish Council Presidency has chosen the motto "A strong Europe in a changing world" for its six-month term of office. It has set three priorities: a secure Europe, a competitive Europe and a green Europe.

Denmark's presidency also includes the important negotiations on the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) and the future of Erasmus+. The Danish Presidency would like to make targeted use of the EU Youth Conference in Copenhagen (21-23 September 2025) to incorporate the perspectives of young people into these processes.

Focus on security & competitiveness:
Denmark wants to strengthen the EU's self-defence capability by 2030 and expand the defence industry as well as political, civil society and economic support for Ukraine. EU enlargement is to be driven forward. In the area of migration, new solutions are to be developed to manage irregular migration and strengthen partnerships along migration routes. In addition, democratic resilience is to be promoted by regulating tech companies, protecting young people and safeguarding the rule of law.

The EU's competitiveness is also to be strengthened together with the green transformation. In view of the current alarming situation, companies and citizens are to be relieved, trade agreements such as the Mercosur agreement ratified and a genuine capital markets union created.

Sustainability as a guiding principle:
Denmark wants to accelerate the expansion of renewable energies, strengthen the European infrastructure for security of supply and independence from Russian gas and expand the EU's leadership role in climate protection in order to meet the climate targets for 2040.

Negotiations on the Multiannual Financial Framework:
An important focus of the Danish Council Presidency will be the negotiations on the EU's new Multiannual Financial Framework. They will be decisive in determining how much funding will be available for youth projects, Erasmus+ and European cohesion in the future.
