The Code of Conduct Democratic AI was developed by the D64 - Centre for Digital Progress together with numerous civil society organisations. The German Federal Youth Council (DBJR) supports this voluntary commitment and has signed the code as a contribution to the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI). The DBJR is thus committed to democratic, ethical and public welfare-orientated principles in dealing with AI.

Joint commitment for democratic AI
The Code of Conduct is aimed specifically at organisations working for the common good. The aim is to create a practical orientation framework for the use of AI in civil society - regardless of whether organisations develop their own systems, use existing tools or deliberately refrain from using AI.

As part of a participatory process, representatives from over 50 organisations have defined key values and principles. The Code of Conduct is based on eight equal basic principles: Consideration of use, people-centredness, transparency, inclusion & participation, anti-discriminatory attitude, responsibility & accountability, competencies and environmental sustainability.

Why the DBJR has signed
By signing the code, the DBJR wants to make it clear that it takes the opportunities and risks of AI seriously and wants to shape its use in such a way that youth associations and voluntary organisations benefit from its potential - without compromising basic democratic and social values. The Code provides guidance on how AI-supported processes can be introduced responsibly and accompanied in a reflective manner.

What this means for youth organisations
For youth organisations, the CoC can be an important basis for their work with AI applications. It offers a binding framework of values and compass and facilitates a common stance in the civil society environment. The DBJR invites all member organisations to use the voluntary commitment as a guide and - if desired - to sign it as well.

Presentation of the Code of Conduct at DBJR specialist event on 4 December
On Thursday, 4 December, Torben Dzillak (D64 - Centre for Digital Progress) gave a presentation on the topic of "Insights into current socio-political challenges of AI" as part of the hybrid event "AI competence in youth association work". In this context, he also presented the "Code of Conduct Democratic AI" to the numerous participants from the youth organisations and rings and discussed how the values and principles formulated in the code can be applied in practice in youth organisations.

Next steps and signing
The signing of the code remains open: Interested organisations can continue to sign up via the online form at demokratische-ki.de. The DBJR will report on its experiences and possible use of the guidelines, particularly with regard to youth organisations and civil society engagement.
