DBJR on the adoption of the Military Service Modernisation Act by the Bundestag

The DBJR has been intensively involved with the proposed legislation and has contributed to the legislative process. Several statements were submitted and DBJR Chairwoman Daniela Broda was an expert at the public hearing of the Defence Committee. Although the need for modernisation in the area of defence policy is recognised, the DBJR is very critical of the law. In particular, the discrepancy between the emphasised voluntary nature and the actual political direction towards mandatory structures is a cause for concern. The uncertainty for young people in an already difficult phase of their lives could further damage trust in political decision-making.

The issue remains controversial and there are follow-up discussions about the role of the younger generation in security and defence policy. This debate requires a broader societal discussion in order to develop a sustainable and intergenerational security architecture.
