Human rights violations in Turkey: violence against young activists

In Turkey, a delegation of youth organisations, young activists and journalists from Germany was arrested by the police. The delegation had travelled to the Kurdish regions of Turkey to observe the protests against the military escalation in Syria, to document the humanitarian impact of the military clashes and to express their solidarity with the people in the city of Kobanê. This trip was part of the "Peoples' Caravan - Caravan in Defence of Humanity", which led to the Turkish-Syrian border.

According to the reports of those involved, there was considerable physical and psychological abuse during the deportation process. These actions stand in sharp contrast to the fundamental values of freedom and dignity enshrined in international human rights conventions. The delegation had the injuries medically documented after their return to Germany.

These violent incidents are not just isolated cases, but an indication of the ongoing repression of the democratic opposition and the Kurdish population in Turkey. The case is an example of the growing repression that anyone who expresses criticism of the government has to experience on a daily basis. Young people in particular who campaign for democracy and human rights are increasingly at risk.

In this context, international youth exchanges and dialogue are of central importance. They promote understanding of the challenges faced by young people around the world and strengthen solidarity across national borders. The direct dialogue and exchange of experiences not only raises awareness of human rights violations, but also strengthens international cooperation to defend the rights of young people. Youth exchanges must not be restricted by government action, especially not when governments are simultaneously seeking to intensify cooperation in the field of youth.

The German Federal Youth Council stands in solidarity with young civil society, which is committed to the defence of human rights and the rights of young people to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. Only through dialogue with partners and international pressure can it be ensured that violations of human rights and civil liberties do not go unnoticed and that the scope for peaceful protests and civil society engagement is not further restricted.
