Reorganisation of Erasmus+: DBJR brings perspective to the European Parliament

For the German Federal Youth Council (DBJR), this invitation was an important step towards actively incorporating the views of organised youth into the ongoing Erasmus+ reform process. Such formats are of central importance as they offer the opportunity to integrate the practical experience of youth organisations directly into political decision-making processes and to draw attention to the needs and challenges of the younger generation.

The consultation was far more than just an information event. It enabled the youth organisations represented to share their professional expertise and practical experience and actively contribute to the ongoing discussions. Deputy Chair Özge Erdoğan spoke on behalf of the DBJR in the committee. The focus was particularly on the call for a protected budget for youth programmes, also known as earmarking. This is of crucial importance from a youth policy perspective, as a fixed budget ensures that youth organisations have a reliable financial framework to continue their work and reach young people in particular who have fewer opportunities to participate.

The youth organisations were able to coordinate their key demands in advance and represent them as one. Participation in the consultation showed that the expertise of organised youth can and should be incorporated into European decision-making processes in order to sustainably shape the impact of Erasmus+ on the younger generation.

For the DBJR, the consultation was an important step, but now it is important that the perspectives brought forward are taken into account in further negotiations both in the European Parliament and by the European Commission.
