New Year's reception 2026: Federal President recognises the importance of volunteering for democracy

In his speech, Steinmeier emphasised the importance of civil society actors: "Dear guests, you all make our country a little bit better every day by giving time, attention and, above all, warmth. And you all strengthen cohesion in our diverse society by bringing together people from very different walks of life. Because wherever we meet as equal citizens, where we exchange ideas, where we support each other, where we work together, everywhere - and almost only there - trust, respect, a willingness to compromise and a sense of community grow. And that is exactly what we need now more than ever to defend liberal democracy against attacks from within and without!"

He thanked those present for their tireless commitment and perseverance: "Thank you for your drive, for your vigour, for your perseverance. Thank you for holding up the flag of humanity day after day. Thank you for your great commitment!"

This year, the Federal President's New Year's Reception was once again a sign of appreciation for all those who are committed to social cohesion and the defence of democracy.
